These are: the ontological context, related to the concept of existence; the semantic, related to the concept of meaning; the epistemic, related to the concept of justification; and the pragmatic, related to the concepts of acceptance and success. Some or all of these contexts, related to different concepts and arguments, could be seen as different ingredients or faces of an integral realism (Newton-Smith, 1981, and Hooker, 1987). Let us take them one by one. I. THE ONTOLOGICAL COMPONENT The common formulation of the ontological ingredient runs something like this: "Scientific realism says that the entities, states and processes described by correct theories really do exist" (Hacking, 1983,21), and looks quite simple.

We do not need to be reminded to which tradition this style of reasoning belong. If a human subject leaves no trace in the relationship between observation and language, perhaps it is present in the language itself. After all, observation language must be human language. e. as soon as the link carrying through truths values from Lo to Lt is established, Lo becomes superfluous and can be left out. In accord with the conviction that syntax can be made independent of semantics, and any formal system independent of its interpretation, theoretical language must be considered independent of observation language; particularly if one takes the logical structure of L t to correspond to the logical structure of the world.

In the context of logic of science this correspondence cannot be further analysed or specified, because any further specification or analysis would, at minimum, involve the rest of the language, if not also the examination of instrumentation, the psychological and sociological context, and so on. The assumption of the existence of such an unequivocal, unmediated, and compact correspondence is the essence of the myth of the "immediately given". By insertion of "an organism N' the essential element of classical Cartesian epistemology, one that brings everything down to the consent of an individual cognitive subject, enters again through the back door.
