And if the versatility of the tool is undoubtedly seen as its most impressive feature, then it would seem strange that it is realized in a hand-operated version. It is known that «Vulkan» and «Isparitel» were automatically-operated units. Why within 15 years did people arrive not at a robotic manipulator, but a hand tool? Nothing strange has happened. Automatic units or robotic manipulators are appropriate, as a rule, to those cases where the system of technological operations is clearly defined, some of them are repeated many times and where it is possible to provide rigid space orientation of the parts and products being treated.

Rigid ionizing ultraviolet radiation. During long-term action this radiation degrades properties of materials and welded joints. It turned out that different methods of welding, brazing, thermal cutting and coating can be used in space, having their own advantages and drawbacks. At first glance, in parallel with coating, the methods of solid-state welding and cutting (explosion welding, diffusion and cold pressure welding and explosion cutting) would seem challenging. Therefore they have not been yet used in space.

All the tool sub-assemblies are arranged in a 400×450×500 mm size container, welded of tubular elements, that made it rigid at a small mass. In this container, called also « knapsack» (can be carried on shoulders) and convenient for fastening on the external surface of the orbital station, are mounted: secondary power source with a panel; cables connecting the power source to a board socket and hand tool, and the working tool itself in a special recess. A board with samples of materials for welding, cutting, brazing and coating deposition is fixed to the container.
