Writing at the end of the Enlightenment, Condorcet, Destutt de Tracy, and Garat simply applied post–Lockean commonplaces to psychology, seen as nothing but theologico–Scholastic speculations on the nature of the soul.

The method established an intrinsic link between logic and vision. Ramist tables became a typographical vogue in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and, as a pedagogical tool, were extremely widespread, especially in German Protestant universities. The encyclopedias of the period also owe much to them. It was initially in these contexts, and for reasons of pedagogical convenience, that the term psychologia first circulated. Within the organization of knowledge at the time, the study of the soul occupied an ambiguous position: it was the first science of Aristotelian natural philosophy, yet it did not seem to constitute an autonomous discipline.
